What Are Solar PV Panels?

Solar PV (photovoltaic) panels, also known as solar electricity panels, simply transfer light into electric to create renewable energy.
These are the most common and popular type of solar panels, that you will often see on the roof of homes, as well as other commercial buildings. When you think of or talk about solar panels in general, it’s most likely these that you’ll have in mind.
Solar PV panels can work in conjunction with other renewable systems such as solar thermal panels or heat pumps, but can also work alone, too.

How Do Solar PV Panels Work?

When exposed to sunlight, solar PV panels produce an electric field – which is why they’re best placed somewhere like a roof that enjoys constant sunlight, preferably south-facing. They can work on cloudy or colder days too, but of course won’t be quite as efficient.
The electricity created is then diverted into your home’s fuse box to be used to power various household appliances including your lights, fridge-freezer and so on – in turn saving you money on your electricity bill.
On top of this, they’re also very important for the environment and will reduce your carbon footprint.

Are Solar Panels Worth It?

Although there is an initial cost to buying and installing solar PV panels, they are a great investment for your home in the long term.
According to Energy Saving Trust estimates, a typical household with a 4.2 kilowatt-peak system can knock between £210 and £514/year off bills at the upcoming price cap rates. If your home doesn’t use the energy it creates, then any surplus amounts can be sold to the electric grid which could see you actually make money, too!
This smart export guarantee (SEG) scheme works by requiring energy suppliers to offer ‘tariffs’ to households which pay a set rate for each kilowatt hour (kWh) of electricity they generate from solar panels but don’t use. The Energy Saving Trust estimates a typical household based in the middle of the country could make between £80 and £110/year.
